Waking from Winter

Ahhhhh Winter.

November hits and you can’t WAIT to wear your sweaters, boots, coats and beanies.

December hits and you are hoping for a magical winter wonderland to aid in your Christmas cheer.

January hits and its your time to really hone in your layering skills. Post holiday laziness sets in and I tend to start fully embracing the “just woke up” or “just worked out” look….

February hits and you start getting antsy because nothing you wear has quite that same excitement it did in the fall. Besides your occasional weekend plans you might honestly have zero feelings of creativity with your closet.

March hits and you feel little tinges of spring in the air, and that excitement of the changing season starts itching in the back of your mind. I start to remember what it feels like to not be freezing all the time, and that I don’t necessarily have to base everything I wear on what the forecast is that day.

FREEDOM!

Oh wait, I may have forgotten how to put together an outfit. I walk out of the house with my “workout” apparel again because I can’t remember what “goes” with jeans…

What did I wear before layering my sleeping shirt under my almost-cute sweatshirt? I think my only option is to Marie-Kondo the crap out of my closet and reintroduce myself to the things that I know spark joy. So many skirts, dresses, and flowy T shirts await their chance to bask in the glorious-ness of spring, I just need to wake them up!

If you shop vintage, you’re bound to have a crazy floral print dress or bright colored shirt in your closet somewhere…start there. Wear something TOTALLY out of your winter comfort zone and just soak it in. Maybe you still have to wear boots and tights with that overly-ambitious spring apparel, just do it. Wearing color feels so energizing and exciting- it will make even the dreariest of almost-spring days feel warm and sunshiny.

This beautiful editorial was shot at my studio (@mieshstudio) using one of my all-time favorite flowers. They are wild and twisted and so fragile: only lasting a few hours once they bloom. Something about them has always felt like my spirit flower (but not my only one…if you read this blog you will hear a lot about my love of flowers).

We wanted to feature the beautiful jewelry creations of Anna Rey (formerly Magpie & Rye if you live in Utah!). Her jewelry is the most beautiful handmade creations, dainty but powerful which I LOVE.
