Queen of Fall

“We all got crowns.

You need to calm down.”

Thank you Taylor Swift for the reminder.

Now although this post has nothing to do with actual queens, drag queens,

or Taylor Swift…I do want to shine some light on a much forgotten part of the year:

LATE Fall.

Early fall gets all the attention with its colorful leaves and quick changes. People start excitedly buying thick knit sweaters like they have never owned a sweater before. If you end up actually wearing said sweater in early fall, you are almost certain to be sweating by the end of the day. Calm down.

Then we have what I am calling Early Christmas. It was out in stores before I had even begun to think of Halloween costumes. People were talking about the theme of their Christmas decor, what they might buy their kids, and potentially where they might be vacationing over New Years. Calm down.

And although I have no qualms with early fall or Christmas, what I love more is when you can wear a sweater because it is actually cold outside. When you can enjoy the leaves crunching under your feet because they have finally fallen from the tress. When then sun sets a bright orange and lights up the wheat colored freeway on your drive home. Everyone is talking about snow and Christmas and whats next, and I’m sitting here just soaking in the beautiful beige of the RIGHT NOW.

So, while you stroll through Target and wonder when Christmas got to be so crazy, just grab a new sweater and actually put it to good use- go outside and enjoy nature holding onto its last few breaths of beauty!

A little about this shoot:

When things start fading into those shades of tans and browns I get all sorts of excited. This shoot was inspired by late fall, when nature is really are on the verge of just totally dying. I wanted the imagery to come across as powerful and majestic.

The set design was created in order to show off each individual dried plants unique color and design. I wanted to balance each one straight up in the air in order to create a tad more modern take on something that is normally so clumped together and falling over in nature. It was SO challenging to create, there were multiple times that I honestly thought I would have to ditch the idea. Even while shooting we had tumbling plants and things breaking! But all in all, it stayed together long enough to capture our vision!

Gear used: Hasselblad 501, Pentax 645, various 35mm cameras. All kodak film (mainly portra 160).
